2004 FESTIVAL - LIST OF FILMS

On March 13th, the UC Berkeley campus was witness to a groundbreaking new event called the Muslim Film Festival. It was met with a curious and enthusiastic audience of approximately 300 students and community members. The festival featured a diverse array of films made by and/or about Muslims, ranging from documentaries to dark comedies such as "T for Terrorist" and "Death Threat", music videos, and even a feature narrative film submitted from Iran titled "Oil Children".

When asked to comment on her favorite film, UC Berkeley sophomore Kiana Castille said, "I found it ["Born in the USA" documentary] to be very interesting because I learned about Muslim people as they interacted in their different professions." This reflects one of the many goals of the film festival, as it strives to educate non-Muslims while providing a creative outlet for Muslims interested in the entertainment industry.

Tickets were sold at a mere $10 for an all-day pass (covering more than 10 short films), and a discounted $7 pass for students and seniors. For this price, movie-goers were able to get a taste of the untapped Muslim talent just finding its voice through the medium of the festival. Audience members were also treated with the hip-hop performance of local artist, Haroon Abbasi as well as a Q&A session with a Bay Area filmmaker, Baiyina Hughley, whose film, "War on Terrorism", was featured in the festival.

The day closed with a raffle of gifts donated by a local Muslim business, Sultana Bookstore, as well as a relaxing reception and social hour. UC Berkeley freshman, Camille Conrotto, observed, "The atmosphere was really inviting, and even though I’m not Muslim, I enjoyed every film that I saw because I think everyone could relate to them."
